The New Year is a time for many resolutions. One of them may be self-development, or striving to be better and better. What is self-development and why is it so important?

What is self-development?

Everyone has heard of self-development, which is the activity of improving one’s skills, character, and personality. Maslow in his pyramid of needs divided them into important and less important. At the bottom of the pyramid are physiological needs, and at the very top is the need for self-development, which is the action through which you can reach your goal.

Why is self-development so important?

Personal development is as important to the psyche as sports are to health. Thanks to personal development, you can discover your skills, which you often had no idea about, and which can bring very tangible benefits, ie:

  • finding life’s balance,
  • overcoming life’s obstacles,
  • help in finding oneself.

What are the necessary conditions for self-development?

For self-development to be possible several factors must be fulfilled:

  • a person must be provided with minimum conditions for development – he must not worry about satisfying physiological needs;
  • the goal should be clearly defined;
  • one must be motivated.

Self-development in 7 steps

1. Know yourself

In order to expand your horizons, you must first get to know yourself. Therefore, take a moment in your everyday life to answer a few questions:

  • What can’t I imagine life without?
  • What gives me pleasure?
  • What moves me?
  • What is important to me?
  • How do I deal with my emotions? How would I like to react?
  • What motivates me?
  • What makes me angry?
  • What am I most proud of?

When you find the answers to the above questions, then you should think about what to do to make it consistent with your beliefs. You should modify your life so that you can easily achieve your most important goals.

2. Determine your short-term and long-term goals

The next important step is to set your short and long-term goals. Write them out on a piece of paper and group them from the most important to the less important.

Goals should be set for each day, month, year. When setting goals, you should be very scrupulous in accounting for their implementation – successes and failures, from which lessons should be learned for the future.

In order to achieve your goals more effectively, you should have a clear picture of yourself in a few years. If any of your goals are inconsistent with this image, you should abandon them.

3. Accept the changes that are taking place

Change is an inherent part of life. Time passes and no one or nothing can guarantee security for years to come. Accepting these changes requires stepping outside your comfort zone, getting to the root of the problem.

Each new goal requires the implementation of new habits and routines that must be fully accepted.

4. Learn

The old adage says “learning is the key to power.” To grow, you need to read, learn, among other things, by attending various trainings. This allows you to develop the skills you already have and learn new ones.

Through continuous development, the mind becomes more receptive and absorbs new knowledge better. With new skills, you can easily climb the career ladder.

5. Find your authority

The best ideas in history were a product of many other previous ideas. That’s why successful people have several common traits, and they are:

  • high ingenuity,
  • modernity,
  • creative thinking,
  • persistence in achieving their goals.

Everyone who has achieved success, bought it with hard work and making a lot of mistakes. Therefore, it is worth learning from others’ mistakes, so you can avoid the same mistakes in yourself.

6. Find time for pleasure

The way you spend your free time has a huge impact on your work efficiency. That is why it is so important to have a hobby that relaxes you and helps you fight stress and everyday problems. The balance between work, rest and sleep is very important for the proper functioning of the entire nervous system.

7. Accept your own weaknesses

There is no perfect man, everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, people tend to exaggerate their weaknesses and negate their strengths. People who do not accept their weaknesses as they really are, do not fully accept themselves and others.

Self-development is only possible when a person accepts himself fully, with all his faults and shortcomings.
