Want to learn a foreign language? Use useful applications that will help you learn a language without even leaving your home. They will help you learn new words quickly. They put emphasis not only on listening and speaking, but also on grammar and writing. They allow you to acquire correct pronunciation and accent. Check which one is worth downloading to your phone.

Memrise

This is a great application that allows you to learn vocabulary through fun. It is aimed at people of all ages. It allows to learn really many different foreign languages (even African dialects are available!). You can find here both courses based on standard textbooks and original vocabulary lists that will be useful in various everyday situations

Memrise is based on a teaching method that consists in creating funny or bizarre associations with new words. The proposed courses are often combined with memes uploaded by users. If you want, you can add your own at any time! Memes really help in memorizing vocabulary and stimulate creativity. You can also follow other students and compete with them. See where you rank for a particular course. This can motivate you to take action.

It is also worth reminding you that Memrise uses an algorithm to repeat vocabulary at specific intervals. It calculates when and how often you should check each word, and the app will send you a notification on your phone at the right time

Babbel

The Babbel app resembles a traditional foreign language course. The minimalist layout makes learning a new language neither overwhelming nor discouraging. Each lesson contains translations, variations of words or phrases, pictures and practical information. Each phrase is accompanied by its correct pronunciation. You can also see in which situations new words are used

Lessons usually last 15 minutes, so you will have no problem placing them in your schedule. And the My Activity module allows you to track your progress.

Duolingo

Duolingo focuses on reading, writing and pronunciation, challenging you through a series of fun tasks. It’s amazing how quickly you can master the basics without even realizing it. Plus, you can go back to previous lessons at any time and work on your weak points. The app keeps you motivated with frequent reminders and rewards for your progress. A cute owl mascot will guide you through the lessons, improving your mood.

The short exercises are game-like. The application does not limit the number of languages you can learn at the same time. Remember to repeat vocabulary regularly and not to focus only on new words. You can also listen to short stories to see how much you understand them.

It is important to note that most of the courses are available in English, so we suggest that you choose this application especially if you have at least basic knowledge of the language

Busuu

This app is based on machine learning, so it perfectly mimics traditional classes. Busuu works with experienced native speakerswho will teach you the correct pronunciation of vocabulary words. The application offers not only online mode, but also offline mode. So you can use it even if you don’t have an Internet connection at the moment

When you sign up for Busuu, you select the language you want to learn. The app will help you determine what level you are at and your main motivations. You then set a daily learning goal. If you have chosen a paid subscription, Busuu will additionally prepare an appropriate plan to help you succeed. For example, if you aim to learn English three times a week for 10 minutes each, you will become proficient in English after about eight months. You will also like the clear, bright layout of the app.

HelloTalk

The (perhaps slightly less well-known) HelloTalk is also worth mentioning. Thanks to this application you can practice speaking in a foreign language. Additionally, the app reduces the stress of talking in real time. You can find native speakers and discuss with them in a chat room similar to WhatsApp. Send and receive voice and text messages

Importantly, users can correct each other’s messages using the built-in tool. The application offers a translation system, so you can avoid moments when you really want to convey something, but you miss a word. By the way, you can save your favorite phrases

So as you can see: there is something for everyone. The most important thing is to choose an application that best suits your learning style and the time you have available
